Quickbooks Error 6190 6182

What is happening

The following error occurs when opening a company file on a Windows Server:

Error code -6190, -82 QuickBooks was unable to open the file [path\filename] on the host computer [host name].

Why is this happening

This error is caused by a mismatch between the transaction log file (.tlg file extension) and the company file (.qbw file extension). This can occur if the company file was copied to a different computer and updated without its associated transaction log file. When the company file is copied back to the Windows server, the two files are mismatched.

Detailed Instructions

This issue has been resolved in the latest release for QuickBooks 2009. QuickBooks 2009 users, update your product to the latest release.

To resolve this issue:

  1. Rename the transaction log file to [company file name]OLD.qbw.TLG The transaction log is stored in the same folder as the company file, and it has the same name as the company file with a .tlg file extension.
  2. Open the company file. QuickBooks automatically creates a new file to log transactions from that point forward.
Note: Deleting the transaction log file is not recommended as it can be used to recover lost data.

To prevent the error from happening again, always copy the transaction log file with the company file when moving data from one computer to another.

Important: When copying a company file and its transaction log back to their original location, do not overwrite the original files. Rename one set of files as a precaution against data loss.
