Settle IRS Debt for Pennies on Dollar – Bullshit!

Our Miami CPA Firm does its fair share of tax work and lately a whole lot of IRS tax disputes. I’ve been an Accountant in Miami for over 25 years and have successfully negotiated many deals on behalf of my clients with the IRS regarding back taxes (especially payroll taxes), tax disputes and other related matters. But I’ve never been able to settle for “Pennies on the Dollar” as you see in these TV & Radio ads and websites. Am I doing something wrong? Absolutely not!  The IRS is more than willing, and usually goes the extra mile, to settle debts with taxpayers and businesses alike. But not for pennies on the dollar!

The wrong doing has been perpetrated by unscrupulous companies whose deceptive advertising practices give taxpayers and small business owners alike false hope. There have been several high profile cases this past year where these companies have finally been silenced for false or misleading advertising. My gripe is why does it take the government so long to crack down? Thousands of people have fallen victim to these crooks and have no other recourse than to start the process over with reputable CPA‘s and or Tax Attorneys (minus the millions they lost).

Recently the former owner of a popular tax law practice that was shut down under pressure from the California Attorney General has been hit with a $183,000 tax lien by the Internal Revenue Service.  “Tax Lady” Roni Deutch had heavily advertised her services for helping taxpayers resolve their tax problems with the IRS. The firm earned about $25 million annually, and Deutch claimed it was the largest tax resolution firm of its kind in the country. However, the California Attorney General charged her last August with swindling thousands of her clients out of millions of dollars and filed a $34 million lawsuit against her (see California AG Sues ‘Tax Lady’ Roni Deutch for $34M).

Federal Trade Commission (FTC) requested American Tax Relief, a tax resolution firm based in Beverly Hills, California, to shut its doors due to deceptive business practices that cheated American consumers out of some $60 million.  According to the FTC news release, In TV, radio and Internet ads, American Tax Relief LLC falsely claims it can settle consumers’ delinquent federal and state taxes for a fraction of the amount they owe. The company also falsely claims that it can remove tax liens and stop wage garnishments, bank and tax levies, property seizures, and ‘unbearable monthly payments.

As a Miami Accountant I urge you to seek out a reputable CPA or Tax Attorney with the proper credentials and experience. In our next next segment will give you tips on how to avoid tax debt relief scams every taxpayer should know. Or feel free to call us for a consultation 786-250-4450.
